K-5 Core Curriculum

Math in Focus is based on the Singapore Math Framework which is based on research of math mastery in Singapore, and consistently ranks at the top in international math testing. The central focus of the program is in on problem solving where students acquire and apply mathematical concepts and skills to real-world problems. There is intentional progression of concepts to instill a deep understanding of mathematics rather than rote memorization of skills. It also aims to instill in students an attitude that math is important and approachable.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula USD Board of Education adopted Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Big Ideas MATH in 2015.  Big Ideas MATH is a researchbased program providing a rigorous, focused, and coherent curriculum.

The program balances conceptual understanding with procedural fluency, as research shows that students benefit from equal exposure to discovery learning and direct instruction.   The program provides a balanced approach to instruction beginning with activities and exploration followed by teacher directed examples and reinforcement of academic vocabulary. Students transfer the concepts and application of content previously learned with exercises which provide a balance between procedural fluency and problem solving. Mathematical practices are embedded in every lesson by encouraging abstract thought, reasoning, and inquiry as well as perseverance and student discourse.  The Big Ideas Math curriculum is a research-based curriculum providing a rigorous, focused, and coherent curriculum for middle school and high school students.
